Prince, dead?! It’s the kind of news nobody expected would ever actually happen, but just like Bowie three months before him, Prince has finally left the building.
The news of Prince’s death broke yesterday afternoon, confirmed by his publicist and the Minnesota police. He was found dead in his home, aged only 57, after having to drop out of planned live shows due to the flu.
As if his age wasn’t the hardest detail to swallow in this awful, awful news, Prince only performed his last show a week ago, and told fans to ‘wait a few days before you waste any prayers’.
Unsurprisingly, tributes have been flooding in from every corner of the globe, from the worlds of fashion, music, film, politics and more – Prince was an icon in all of these areas, and one of the most successful black rock stars of all time. That’s not to mention a style icon, revolutionary artist, guitarist and songwriter.
Fans and press raced to Prince’s Minnesota home after the news broke on April 21st, where they lay flowers, balloons and other tributes to Prince, whose full name was Prince Rogers Nelson.
Street parties popped up playing Prince’s music, while radio stations ditched their entire playlists to pay tribute to one of music’s greatest ever performers. Many landmarks and brands, including MTV, turned themselves or their logos purple in honour of one of Prince’s most famous tracks, Purple Rain.
For those further away, thousands have taken to social media to share their own stories of Prince, and pay their respects.
Prince, we can’t believe you’re gone and we’ll miss you, but thank you for the memories. Here are some of the most touching tributes to the late, great star:
