Move over, models – the Pirelli calendar 2016 has landed, and it’s a totally different look for the brand. We’re used to racy models (in various states of undress) right through from January to December, but this time? The Pirelli Calendar 2016 might just be its most feminist yet.

Shot by American photographer Annie Leibovitz, who was the woman behind the infamous Caitlyn Jenner’s coming-out cover, the calendar features a new crop of inspirational women from the worlds of sport, film and music.

We’re talking the amazing Amy Schumer, Wimbledon champion Serena Williams, super-blogger Tavi Gevinson and the one and only Yoko Ono. As well as Chinese actress Yao Chen and Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, this calendar looks like Pirelli’s most racially diverse yet.

Serena Williams

And that’s not all; normally known for their super-sexy stripped back styling (literally – the calendar often features topless or nude shots), and while there’s still a lot of skin on show for 2016 it’s all about strength, not seduction.

Serena Williams looks Amazonian with her powerful back to the lens, while Amy Schumer strips down to her underwear as she sips on a cup of coffee, tummy rolls and all. After the calendar reveal, she tweeted “Beautiful, gross, strong, thin, fat, pretty, ugly, sexy, disgusting, flawless, woman. Thank you @annieleibovitz”.

Amy Schumer

When asked to shoot a calendar with women chosen for their “outstanding cultural, professional, sporting and artistic influence”, Annie wanted the pictures “to show the women exactly as they are, with no pretense. The Amy Schumer portrait added some fun. It’s as if she didn’t get the memo saying that she could keep her clothes on...”.

Pirelli have definitely stepped up their game since 2015, when we were seriously excited to see Candice Huffine make the 2015 calendar cut, being the first ever plus-size model to do so in the calendar’s 60 year history. We can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store… Congratulations, ladies!
