Get set for Chicago director Rob Marshall’s new musical starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Penélope Cruz, Kate Hudson and, well, virtually every Tinseltown babe you can think of.
Nine is a spicy all-singing, all-dancing number that’s cost a cool £60 million to produce. Based on 8 1/2, the Sixties drama about Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini’s colourful life, the movie centres on a film director’s mid-life crisis and his reflection on all the women in his life – his wife, mistress, mother, confidante, muse, agent… The man is obviously a glutton for complication!
From this sexy harem of women, it must be hard to pick a favourite, but we’re thinking sensual Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, who performs a burlesque dance dressed in a lacy basque, stockings and high heels, might just tip it.
Tempted back to Hollywood after a long absence are Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren. Many happy returns ladies! We’re looking forward to seeing you strut your stuff on the big screen once again.
And with the screenplay co-written by the late, great Anthony Minghella, we can be assured of a quality script and dialogue. So forget the recession for a couple of hours and enjoy some pure razzle-dazzle, we say.
The original 1982 Broadway production of Nine, starring Raul Julia, won five Tony Awards including Best Musical.
