The Oscars 2014 was a tale of two films: 12 Years A Slave and Gravity. While 12 Years took home the coveted Best Picture award, and bagged newcomer Lupita Nyong'o the Best Supporting Actress gong, Gravity was lauded for its groundbreaking use of technology and saw director Alfonso Cuaron win the Best Director award. This is the second year in a row Best Picture and Best Director have gone to separate films.

Matthew McConaughey beat Leonardo DiCaprio to win the Best Actor role for Dallas Buyers Club, and Cate Blanchett took home the Best Acrtress title for Blue Jasmine. Despite being nominated for ten awards, the American Hustle cast and crew went home empty handed (no second Oscar for Jennifer Lawrence), as did Wolf of Wall Street.
