Oz the Great and Powerful star Michelle Williams explains why playing a princess was such a big draw and how her daughter persuaded to don a wig…
My Week With Marilyn star, Michelle Williams has immersed herself in gritty, sombre roles for the last few years, so her latest role as good witch, Glinda, in Oz The Great and Powerful marks a real 180 for the actress.
She explains: "I wanted to make a movie that my daughter could see. And I was really excited to be part of something that had an overall good message and that wasn’t tainted with sarcasm or ill humour."
As well as the film's escapist themes, Michelle's movie makeover also marks a big change: "The look took a lot of time. It evolved. There were so many costume fittings."
The most dramatic change in her look is due to the flowing honey-blonde wig she wears, which like her decision to take the role, was largely influenced by her daughter, Matilda: "For a moment we thought maybe that Glinda would have short hair. Then I realised, having a little girl, that she should instead be the fufillment of every child’s fantasy of what a princess looks like."
Though, the actress promises the movie offers something for everyone: "I hope that [the audience] is transported by this magical journey into another realm where anything is possible. Where the best is possible and the best in human nature is really celebrated. It’s a movie that you can take your whole family to."
Oz The Great and Powerful is in cinemas now.
