Metallics and blacks were the order of the day with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Rihanna leading the way, while ladies who opted for sizzling silvers and golds included Scarlett Johansson in a tulle and beaded Dolce & Gabbana gown, Leighton Meester in a floor-sweeping champagne Marchesa gown and newlywed Carey Mulligan, who made her first red carpet debut as a married woman in a stunning metallic Prada knee length dress. Gwyneth Paltrow bucked the dark trend in a blue satin Prada dress, while Emma Stone went ultra girlie in a sparkling scarlet Lanvin frock. But while metallics and blacks were the safer option, daring and bold was another key trend on the Met Ball red carpet as the A-list vied for the title of best dressed.

With Alexa Chung leading the black brigade in a quirky leather dress which she wore over a white blouse, Rooney Mara in a black lace gown by Givenchy and Cate Blanchett in McQueen made up the numbers in long black gowns.

And Twilight star Kristen Stewart and singer Florence Welch flouted all the style rules, with K-Stew causing a flash-bulb frenzy in a patchwork Balenciaga gown with black, red and blue embellished panels and Florence winning our award for best statement gown in a tiered white Alexander McQueen dress and heels.
