The X Factor contestants have kept us hooked for 10 weeks with their diverse performances and wow-worthy outfits on the live shows, but things finally came to a close last night as One Direction, Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson went head-to-head to take the X Factor 2010 crown.

While One Direction came in third after performing their second rendition of Torn - which won them a place in the live shows - Rebecca Ferguson and Matt Cardle battled it out with their winners’ singles before Matt took the title.

The former painter and decorater was stunned by the win, and despite being rendered almost speechless on stage, he later shared backstage: 'Thanks to everyone who voted for me, they've turned my world inside out and upside down and I want to do them all proud. I want to have a long career and be successful.'

He proved to have been as popular with his fellow contestants as he had been with viewers, as they rushed on stage to congratulate and embrace him. It was clear Matt was particularly pleased to be re-united with fellow boys group contestant Aidan Grimshaw, who he has previously described as like 'a little brother' to him.

Matt showed plenty of support for his fellow finalists following the show, saying backstage: 'One Direction are such great guys and Rebecca is one of the sweetest girls you'll ever meet - they're both going to get a lot, they deserve it.'

Matt's first single, a cover of Biffy Clyro's Many of Horror, which has been re-titled When We Collide, is out now!
