Think of Marilyn Monroe and most people picture her stood over a New York subway gate, flirtatiously trying to control the flying hem of her pleated white dress. An icon in itself, that white halterneck dress has been sold in auction for a staggering $5.6 million.
Having been part of Debbie Reynolds’ incredible collection of legendary Hollywood memorabilia for years, the American actress announced earlier in the month that it would be up for sale and anticipated it fetching $2 million.
But after a tense 20 minute bidding process, the estimate was exceeded by a cool $3 million and the legendary lot won by a secret phone bidder.
With its destination unknown, here's hoping it will go on public display.
