Madonna pays homage to Marilyn Monroe in her 1984 hit Material Girl
Going, going, gone! Madonna proved she is still a Material Girl worth thousands of dollars over the weekend when a collection of her most iconic costumes and personal items sold at auction.
Described as ‘the largest collection of Madonna memorabilia from her personal and professional life ever to be offered at auction’, Julien's two-day Icons & Idols: Rock n' Roll auction in Beverly Hills attracted fans and celebrities alike with pieces fetching staggering prices on Saturday. Suffice to say it exceeded our eBay limit...
Proving we’re all still Desperately Seeking Susan, Queen Madge’s jacket from the cult 1985 film sold for a whopping $252,000 (£159,000). Her memorable hot-pink satin gown and stole, worn in the video for Material Girl and inspired by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, sold for $73,125 (£46,040).
Other cinematic delights from Madonna’s acting career included a gown from the 1996 musical-film Evita ($15,000/ £9,433) and her fetching baseball uniform from A League Of Their Own ($31,250/£19,652), which last saw action alongside co-star Geena Davis in 1992.
It wasn’t just her professional wardrobe either…Sean Penn might be tickled to learn that the wedding dress Madonna wed him in on her birthday in 1985 took an impressive $81,250 (£51,192). With a price tag like that, let’s hope the current owner holds onto the dress for longer than their tempestuous four-year marriage…
Madonna's latest wardrobe clear-out coincides with her career-defining hit ‘Like A Virgin’, celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. Has it really been three decades? Seems like only yesterday we were jumping up and down on our bunk bed with a bed-sheet tied to our head. Congrats, your Madgesty!
