Lupita Nyong'o made the headlines for all the wrong reasons post-Oscars after her stunning, one-of-a-kind Calvin Klein dress which she wore to the glittering ceremony was STOLEN from her hotel room at The London in LA as she attended industry meetings and luncheon's on Tuesday last week.
Draped head-to-toe in gorgeous pearls, not only was the gown said to be worth a whopping $150,000 (that's around £97,000) but the fact that someone broke into her private room whilst she was out undoubtedly left Lupita feeling very unnerved and worried for her safety. So, of course, she reported the crime to the police straight away.
After days of investigating and searching for the thieved goods, the dress was finally uncovered by the cops not to far from where it was last seen. In fact, it's reported that it was bundled up under a sink in a bin liner with a few of the garment's pearls amiss in the very hotel from where it went walkabouts. Sacre bleu!
However, the plot thickens. Although the police recovered the garment on the premises, the find came courtesy of US celeb website TMZ who said it was contacted anonymously by the alleged thief and told exactly where the dress could be found. Why, you ask? Because the pearls were apparently fake while the burglar was said to be very angry about it. Yikes...
After receiving the tip-off, TMZ then called the police who located the dress in the exact location described on the phone by the culprit.
Whether or not the pearls are worth the HUGE sum of money they're quoted to be, we can't say but irregardless, no matter if the dress' worth is in question, this is still a crime that's rocked the fashion and Lupita Nyong'o's worlds. The frock is yet to be confirmed to be the original worn by the Twelve Years A Slave actress but we're told the LAPD are working closely with the designer's at Calvin Klein to affirm its authenticity.
Our only hope is that the whole ordeal hasn't left Lupita feeling unsafe and on edge — that would be the worst outcome of all...
