Selling for $2.6 million, Liz Taylor’s collection of couture dresses has broken Christie’s auction records

However many times couture is pronounced dead, it always rises again, and recession or no recession, the online auction of Elizabeth Taylor’s couture collection has broken Christie’s records with the total raised reaching $2.6 million.

Roughly ten times the total estimated, the collection included an embellished Christian Dior dress that had been valued at $5,000 but was sold for an incredible $362,500.

And while the auction continues today with fine art and memorabilia entering the bidding war, Tuesday’s jewellery auction saw a diamond ring given to Liz by Richard Burton go for $8.8 million and $11.8 million for a pearl necklace.
