Leighton Meester lands a record deal

The Gossip Girl is set to swap the Upper East Side for a downtown recording studio...

Who would've thought it? Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester has ditched the Alice bands and preppy chic of her on-screen persona to launch a singing career. Queen B has just secured herself a record contract with Universal Republic and is in the process of recording her debut album. As Blair Waldorf, we're used to seeing Meester play the bitchy, prim princess but we're promised a sound that will be much cooler and far hipper than anything Blair could've dreamed up. Talking to InStyle at the Chloe boutique launch in LA in LA, Meester told us "I've been celebrating since I found out. The sound is going to be electro-pop edgy dance."

You may be as surprised as we were at the sultry, husky voice on Meester's first track, Betty Davis Eyes; we are, after all, more used to hearing that voice deliver cutting one liners and withering criticism. Let's hope the music critics are kinder to her!
