The Cannes Film Festival was brought to a spectacular close yesterday as top Hollywood star Kirsten Dunst was named Best Actress. Scooping the award in a stunning strapless Chanel Couture confection, the Melancholia star fought all the odds to win the coveted prize after the director of the film, Lars Von Trier, was thrown out of the festival for making inappropriate comments.

Meanwhile, Brad Pitt’s film, Tree of Life, was awarded the Palme d’Or prize, the top honour at the festival. Although Brad wasn’t in attendance (he joined his partner Angelina Jolie at the Kung Fu 2 premiere in LA), there was plenty of glamour at the closing ceremony, with jurors Uma Thurman (looking spectacular in a cobalt blue gown) and Robert De Niro on hand to fete the films.
