Her role in the The Theory Of Everything has catapulted Felicity Jones from respected Brit thesp to global star. Here's why we think she's this year's Lupita Nyong'o.

Felicity Jones was already having a pretty good January, with best actress BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG nominations for her role as Stephen Hawking's wife Jane Wilde in the critically acclaimed The Theory Of Everything. But this afternoon she scored the big one: a best actress Oscar nomination, competing alongside Julianne Moore, Marion Cotillard, Rosamund Pike and Reese Witherspoon to win the film industry's biggest prize. Last year she might have been a well-respected British actress, now she's a global star.

There are a few striking similarities between Felicity and last year's awards season darling Lupita Nyong'o. At 31 they're the same age (relatively mature to find fame in Hollywood terms), both have enjoyed a rocket-like trajectory into the spotlight thanks to a single film role, both are seriously smart - Lupita has a Masters from Yale, Felicity an English degree from Oxford - and their rich and broad acting credentials aside, both know how to absolutely kill it on the red carpet.

So will we see a Lupita-in-Prada moment from Felicity at the Oscars next month? She's already being courted by the big brands. Dior dressed her for the Golden Globes last Sunday, a fashion house famous for championing hot new faces (see Jennifer Lawrence for further details), and like Lupita she's got the cool-factor after ticking off looks by McQueen, Christopher Kane and Erdem.

The jury's out on what she'll choose to wear when she hits that 300ft Academy Awards red carpet on the 25th, but with verteran Hollywood superstylist Karla Welch in her camp it won't be a dud. And will she win? She's facing strong competition, particularly from Julianne Moore who is the favourite after bagging a Golden Globe, but whether or not she actually walks away with the prize this is still a huge moment for the Brit star. She should revel in it.
