Responsible for Jessie J’s sophisticated make-under, Cobbie Yates is already making waves in the competitive world of celebrity styling. Having risen from the ranks as a personal shopper at Selfridges, he is somewhat of a walking designer directory and knows exactly where to take A-list clients including Justin Bieber and Conor Maynard. We caught up with the super-stylist to talk Jessie J, Cara Delevingne, Justin Bieber and more...
Jessie J’s style has transformed dramatically since you’ve been working with her, why did you both feel it was time for change?
She was just ready for something new and it was a good time for her to experiment. With a lot of my clients it’s a creative process that we go through together, we talk about what our goals are. Sometimes people just want a change.
And tell us about Jessie J’s Olympic look?
This was one of the biggest performances of Jessie’s career and, factoring in the stage and the cars involved, we knew she needed something stable and functional. Ironically this was a bodysuit (a look Jessie was trying to move away from) but we styled it in a way that was statuesque and worked for a global performance. We wanted to endorse a British designer and Jessie Loves Vivienne Westwood, so it was a great match. Most of Vivienne’s archive collection was brought to us to choose from and the head couturier was there to help with fittings. We had a lot of fun - this was our first choice but that didn’t stop Jessie from dressing up and trying on everything else.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best thing is to see someone I’ve worked with using what we’ve discussed. Taking my advice but having fun with it to become a better version of themselves.
Do you prefer hot new trend pieces or old favourites?
I like to incorporate pieces over and over again - all the best people in style do. The Olsens, for example, always wear the same pair of beaten-up brogues - it shows people that you don’t have to be a clothes horse and that those items are yours and you love them.
You've also styled Justin Bieber and taken him shopping at Dover Street Market. How manic was it?!
I think it depends on where you go. If you go with Justin Bieber to River Island at 3 O’Clock on a Saturday you’re really going to have a task on your hands! The kind of stores that I took him to he hadn’t been to in London before so it was a lot quieter. It was just about closing off the store, getting what you want and getting out. Towards the end of the day it got a bit chaotic but his team are really friendly. I’ve been lucky to work with such great people.
We also spotted on your blog that you and Reggie partied with Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn – tell us about that night out?!
Being in London it is kind of just a creative hub and everyone knows everyone. I think that particular night was Kanye’s Christmas party after he launched his first collection and he just had a little get-together with a bunch of people. We just went down, and enjoyed our evening.
