It may not seem like a pressing issue to you, but Gwyneth Paltrow is on a mission to help all of us yawn correctly, writing on her lifestyle website Goop. What's more, like with a lot of Gwynnie's blogs, it's got everybody talking about it.
The blog post, titled, 'Why Yawning is Important—And How To Optimize the Reflex', explains the reasoning behind the exercise. In it, Gwynnie explains how, when she was recently dining with her friend Michael Lear (who she describes as 'a wonderful yogi and important quarterback for mindfulness and meditation'), her own yawn suppression sparked Lear to remind Paltrow of the importance of a really good yawn.
She quotes: '"There’s a perception that it’s rude or that it means that you’re bored, but the reality is that it’s a very important mechanism for releasing stress. It feels good for a reason: Trust that your body knows how to calibrate itself.”'
She then gives us two exercise to try. We'd give you an overview, but we suggest you visit her own blog instead to familiarise yourself, as it's a lot more detailed than you'd think!
Suffice to say it involves a lot of tilting, a great deal of 'Ujjayi breathing' and quite a LOT of stretching.
Who knew yawning was so complicated? Time to get practising...
