Robert Downey Jr, Meryl Streep and The Hangover also snapped up awards at this year’s ceremony in LA

It came as no surprise to hear that James Cameron was celebrating after winning the top two gongs at last night’s Golden Globes for his epic blockbuster Avatar.

The award-winning director was crowned not only with the Best Picture award, beating out stiff competition from Inglorious Basterds and The Hurt Locker, but also Best Director for the film that passed the billion-dollar mark in less than a month.

The cast including Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver joined the director on-stage to collect the gong.

Sandra Bullock took the Best Actress in a Drama award for her role in The Blind Side, while Jeff Bridges got a standing ovation when he collected his Best Actor in a Drama award for Crazy Heart.

The Best Actor/Actress in a Musical/Comedy went to Robert Downey Jr for his recent role in Sherlock Holmes and Meryl Streep for her role in Julie & Julia.

Laugh-out-loud film, The Hangover took the award for Best Picture, Musical/Comedy while Pixar’s Up won Best Animated Film.

In TV awards, our newest Monday night fix, high-school singing show Glee, picked up Best Television Series Comedy or Musical while the Best Actor/Actress in a Television Series went to Toni Collette for her show United States of Tara and Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock.

With one Golden Globe under their belt, no doubt this year’s winners will be hoping for Oscar glory on March 7. While we can’t predict who will win, we’ll be here with all the winners and losers so watch this space.
