Celebrity first dates can be just as awkward as ours, and they're not afraid to spill on what went wrong, either. While Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively might have hooked up in a not-so-straightforward way, it was roses and romancing for these other famous partners. Read on for seven famous first dates that launched our favourite celebrity couples.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
We know that Blake and Ryan met on the set of The Green Lantern in 2011, the couple actually met when they went on a double date…with other people. Speaking on the radio, Ryan revealed 'She was on a date with another guy and I was on a date with another girl. That was the most awkward date for [them] probably because we were just like fireworks coming across'. Umm, fireworks? Speaking to EW, Blake spilled '[That date] went well for him. I don't know about fireworks for me'. Oooh, burn! 'We were such good friends for so long when we were both single, we were still trying to find each other's [perfect date]. We'd sit around being like, 'Oh jeez, do you know anyone?' And it didn't click for a good year and a half. Like, 'Oh hey, wait, hold on. We could date! That's what I appreciate about our relationship is that he really is my friend, first and foremost still… Not just in our history but in everyday life. And I think that's the secret to my happiness.
Kim Kardashian-West and Kanye West
They'd known each other for nearly a decade before they finally got together in 2012, but how did Kim and Kanye spend their first date as more than friends? It's not what you think, although it does make sense… Posting a video of the date on her Instagram page, Kim and Kanye kicked off their shoes to play on a piano mat in the now closed toy shop, FAO Schwarz, for one of their first romantic dates, as well as heading off to a go-kart track. Now that's an original idea.
Michelle and Barack Obama
Barack had to work for his future wife, but eventually landed a first date in 1989. Speaking to O magazine, Barack spilled that he "treated her to the finest ice cream Baskin-Robbins had to offer”, after having lunch at the Art Institute of Chicago – “there's a little courtyard with a fountain" – and walking to the cinema to see Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing.
Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady
Gisele and Tom actually met the old-fashioned way, on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. The couple went for dinner in 2006, and the rest is history. Gisele has later said that she knew straightaway, 'I could see it in his eyes that he was a man with integrity who believes in the same things I do'.
Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith
The future Smiths first met when Jada auditioned for The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, but it wasn’t until years later that the couple went out for dinner on their first date. Speaking to YourTango, Jada spilled 'After we had known each other for many years, we went out for dinner one night and I saw that he had grown from this lanky kid to this really responsible man'.
Victoria and David Beckham
Victoria recently found the dress she wore for her first date with husband David, which was actually at a French restaurant in Manchester’s Midland Hotel. It sounds like Victoria was the one chasing David, too, as she reached out to him after meeting at a charity football match.
Suki Waterhouse and Bradley Cooper
Suki and Bradley might have called it quits, but their first date was super spontaneous. The pair met at a party in London, and after being introduced, Bradley asked if he could take Suki to another club (Cirque Le Soir). The clincher? 'He's a ridiculously good dancer'.
