Eva Mendes owns the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival

Eva Mendes stole the show in a Dolce & Gabbana gown at the premiere of Baaria, at the opening of the 66th Venice Film Festival

Though the Venice Film Festival is supposed to be about a film competition, yesterday's opening night on the red carpet on the Venice Lido had us thinking it was all about a battle of the gowns.

Eva Mendes donned a gown by her favourite Italian designers, Dolce & Gabbana, and utterly stole the show in her animal print look. Eva is a close pal of the design duo and was spotted in July enjoying some chill-out time aboard their yacht off the coast of Porto Fino, Italy.

There were a couple of attempts by Italian actresses to steal Eva's Queen of the Red Carpet crown, most notably by Laura Chiatti who wore midnight blue Prada and Margareth Made who wore a bright white goddess dress with a loose hairstyle.

But back to the films. The opening flick, Baaria is a Sicilian family tale, but there will be offereings from Hollywood greats including George Clooney with his film, The Men Who Stare at Goats; The Road starring Charlize Theron and Viggo Mortensen and French film, White Material starring Isabelle Huppert.

We'll be celebrity spotting from the festival for you, so check back on InStyle.co.uk for more Venice Film Festival news as it happens!
