Starring Eva Mendes opposite real-life boyfriend, Ryan Gosling, The Place Beyond The Pines is the adrenaline-fuelled story of a stunt driver who turns to bank robbing when he discovers he has a baby son to provide for.
Playing the child's mother, Romina, Eva reveals the role really resonated with her as a woman, as the character faces "a primal problem."
"It's turmoil, it's torture," she explains, though promises "the story starts with a bang."
The latest release from Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, the '80s-set crime flick also stars Bradley Cooper and Rose Byrne.
It's clear the role marks a new chapter for Eva, as she explains: "I feel like the more I've lived my life it's made me a better actress.
"You can see it in my twenties and early thirties - I was sheltered, and now I've lived and I get to bring all of that into my work. It's exciting."
