It was victory for Hugh Bonaville and the gang as Downton Abbey fought off competition from Sherlock to be named Best Drama at the National Television Awards 2013…

TV's biggest stars descended on the O2 Arena last night to attend the National Television Awards, and ITV's period favourite, Downton Abbey, fought off stiff competition to be named Best Drama.

Also in the running were BBC shows Sherlock, Doctor Who and Merlin.

Though Merlin had its moment of glory, as Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and Doctor Who actor Matt Smith, were pitted to the post by star of the wizard show, Colin Morgan.

Other winners included Miranda Hart, who was named Best Drama Actress for Call The Midwife, while Channel 4's Alan Carr: Chatty Man was named Best Entertainment show.

The night saw last year's Britain's Got Talent winner, Pudsey the dog, entertain the crowds by dancing with trainer Ashleigh to Psy's Gangnam Style.
