After the explosive Christmas special, we’ve been on the edge of our seat waiting for news from the next season of Downton Abbey, which began filming last month. And now we’ve got a sneak peek at what we can expect, with these on-set pictures of the cast shooting the first scenes.
Filming what seems to be a memorial service for Matthew Crawley, who died in a tragic car accident in the Christmas special, regular cast members Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates), Brendan Coyle (John Bates), Dame Maggie Smith (the Dowager Countess), and Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley) filmed scenes in a graveyard clad in black mourning clothes. A new headstone in honour of Matthew was also snapped, placed next to the late Lady Sybil’s tomb.

The new series will hit our screens in autumn, and promises to be filled with action as several new characters will be introduced, including a new love interest for Lady Mary Crawley, played by Michelle Dockery.
We can’t wait!
