The moment where David chokes up is the point of no return. You have been warned…
David Beckham has always been very passionate about his charity work but, in his latest UN plea, he let his guard down as he got very emotional at a particular moment during his speech.
Standing alongside Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary General, the 40-year-old goodwill ambassador or Unicef addressed the waiting press with a talk at the Giving Youth A Voice summit in New York City, during which he called for more to be done to protect vulnerable children across the globe. And what he said is guaranteed to touch you.
Kicking off his heartfelt speech, David said: ‘As a Unicef ambassador, and as a father, it breaks my heart to see children continue to suffer," he said, speaking of some of the terrible scenes he has witnessed during his countless tours with the international charity.
However, it was when David recalled a story of one of his most recent visits that we fell to pieces.
‘I met a family in the Philippines - a mother and a father, with two young girls, Venus and Viana - who wanted to tell their story,’ he began.
‘On the night the typhoon hit the family were on their roof trying to protect themselves. The mother – tired, scared, exhausted – said to the father, can you please take Viana, so the father did. He has Venus and Viana in his arms.’
‘Unfortunately the father was knocked off the roof by one of the waves. He woke up six hours later, holding one of the girls.’
It was at this point that David had to take a moment to clear his throat, to enable him to continue his plea.
He went on to reveal, ‘A day and a half later, unfortunately, Viana was found face down and unfortunately she had died. This was one of the most devastating stories I heard.’
Ok, so this probably isn’t the sort of thing you want to read on a Friday but, with David’s voice, hopefully more people will be made aware of the terrible goings on around the world, and the challenges that Unicef face on a daily basis.
Clearly moved by David’s speech, his wife Victoria – who was at home with their children in London – took to her Instagram to tell the world how proud she was of her husband’s efforts.
Sharing a snap of her husband at the conference, she captioned the image with the words: ‘Proud of my husband's heartfelt speech today @unicef#globalgoals X vb’.
David, you really are an inspiration…
