A massive cloud of awards season buzz has surrounded Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara's film Carol since it premiered at Cannes back in May. Directed by Todd Haynes, the film sees Blanchett play a Fifties housewife who escapes her crumbling marriage by having an affair with a young shop assistant (Mara).
Mara's quietly brilliant performance has made her a strong favourite for the Best Supporting Actress statuette at the Academy Awards in February this year, while Blanchett should expect to pop up in the Best Actress category - even though she might end up losing out to Brie Larson (Room) or Jennfier Lawrence (Joy).
Perfect performances aside, the film is also beautiful to watch, with Mad Men levels of detail in the costumes by three-times Oscar winner Sandy Powell (The Wolf Of Wall Street) - Blanchett's wardrobe of furs, tweed and gloves is a masterclass in mid-century chic.
