Following the exciting news that Kate Middleton and Prince William had welcomed a baby boy into their family, Cheryl Cole and Cara Delevingne were amongst the many celebrities, politicians and members of the public who quickly took to Twitter to share their congratulations with the Royal couple.

It was a Royal first as the birth of Prince Cambridge was officially announced on Twitter by Clarence House with a message that was promptly retweeted over 15,000 times by happy fans, making it what is thought to be one of the busiest days the social networking site has ever experienced.

Cheryl Cole was one of the first British celebrities to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, tweeting: "Congratulations to William and Kate!! So happy they have a healthy baby and everyone is good. Can't wait to see him #RoyalBaby."

Our favourite Brit model of the moment, Cara Delevingne, couldn't contain her excitement either, exclaiming, "It's a boy!!! Congratulations William and Kate!! x". Cara then added her own Royal name prediction stating: "The Royal baby should be called George!! (If I get it right I win a pint)."

BRITAIN CELEBRATES BIRTH OF PRINCE CAMBRIDGE

Singer Lily Allen also added her own cheeky name suggestions:"Actually I think it will be called Orlando, or Otis…", while The Saturdays' Mollie King sent good wishes, tweeting: "How exciting a future king has been born today!! A huge congratulations to Prince William and Kate xxx"

Kate Middleton's uncle, Gary Goldsmith, also exclaimed that the day was "very very exciting", before being inundated with well-wishers' tweets of congratulations.

And the birth was also acknowledged by some of the biggest names in politics, with Barack Obama waving the flag for Americans commenting: "So pleased to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the joyous occasion of the birth of their first child." Meanwhile Prime Minister David Cameron passed on his congratulations, stating:"I'm delighted for the Duke and Duchess now their son has been born. The whole county will celebrate. They'll make wonderful parents."
