Even the unrivalled glamour of the Cannes Film Festival was taken up a notch last night when, in its 66th year, it was opened with the premiere of the much-anticipated The Great Gatsby, for which A-listers including Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Cara Delevingne, Florence Welch and Nicole Kidman took to the red carpet.

The Great Gatsby stars Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire made a handsome trio, even if huddling from the rain on the damp red carpet at times. Wowing with her minimalist approach, Carey Mulligan worked a blush-hued Dior Couture gown with poppy red lips and a sleek, centre-parted down ‘do that had famous fans looking on in awe.
The boys, meanwhile, were suited and booted with matching bow ties and beaming smiles.
Representing the film’s star-studded soundtrack, Florence Welch and Lana Del Rey stood tall next to the Hollywood heavyweights. While Florence went dotty in pink and black Miu Miu polka dots, Lana opted for old school glamour in a floor-sweeping bandeau gown complete with Chopard jewels and retro curls in her hair.

Giving the red carpet some model attitude, Cara Delevingne and Georgia May Jagger swapped their British street style for plunging necklines and plenty of bling. Cara accessorised her lace Burberry dress with Chopard jewels and uber-glam make-up while Georgia May’s Roberto Cavalli gown was dripping in red gems.
And the Cannes Film Festival judging panel held court in style, with Nicole Kidman working a darling Christian Dior look and Steven Spielberg and Christoph Waltz sharpening up for the occasion.
