InStyle’s Break Up Playlist: For When You're Feeling Sad, Mad Or Actually Quite Glad

Break up songs are our favourite post-heartbreak ritual - here's what to listen to if you're feeling sad, mad or actually quite glad

Breaking up is never easy; from the initial shock to the weeks of wallowing, we’ve all been there and have those little rituals that are only acceptable post-heartbreak (wearing their old t-shirts to bed? Totally acceptable). But the one that we’re all guilty of, tucked up in bed with a box of tissues at the ready? Yep, it’s the break up song. On repeat.

It looks like we’re not the only ones, either – Gwen Stefani opened up to Fresh FM after her split from Gavin Rossdale, and revealed the person the listens to when she’s feeling fragile. Drumroll please…it’s Gwen!

The singer listens back to her old songs to help her through tough times, saying “I feel like I go back and listen to a lot of that stuff, and I get sick. You look at the song and you go, 'That was a red flag. That was a moment where I was feeling just as bad as I feel today and why did I keep it up? In my life I've had two really bad heartbreaks and I've written some incredible music out of it. I feel so lucky to have that and to be able to share it. I feel like it's part of what I contribute to the world and I feel really proud of that”

Wow, and here we are angrily deleting old Instagram photos… (what's your social media split etiquette?).

If that wasn’t depressing enough, here are Team InStyle’s picks of the best break up songs around:

Rebecca Gillam, Digital Writer: “Joan Armatrading – The Weakness In Me”

Isabella Silvers, Digital Assistant: “Anything by Damien Rice absolutely destroyed me”

"Anything by Missy Elliott because she's bad ass and makes you feel invincible"

Robyn Kotze, Fashion Editor: “Passenger – Let Her Go”

“Justin Bieber - Love Yourself. A happy break up song!”

Hannah Vere, Creative Director: “Lana Del Rey - Born To Die”

Nick Spensley, Executive Fashion Director: “Robyn – Dancing On My Own"
