Just a few hours before Beyonce wowed the crowds on stage at the O2 Arena, everything was surprisingly calm backstage. With Beyonce being one of the hardest working performers in the music business, it's no surprise that everyone who's involved with the show is super-organised, very friendly and totally professional, with everything running along smoothly as a result of meticulous planning and organisation.
Tina Knowles, Beyonce’s mum, was hard at work in the massive Mrs. Carter Show dressing room with her team of workers on the sewing machines, overseeing the singer’s mesmerising tour wardrobe and checking any last-minute alterations. “ Regal and royal was the wardrobe theme,” said Tina. “We took inspiration from the O2’s commercial, which had a queen theme, and we wanted something over the top and queen-like but modern at the same time.”
LONG HAIRSTYLE IDEAS
Wardrobe changes are thoroughly planned out so that malfunctions are avoided. “Beyonce has nine costume changes, so you’re going to have little things that go wrong. We practice the quick changes as much as possible but often the outfits are not totally settled until the day of the concert, and it’s an ongoing process. Beyonce studies her performances on film and makes changes for two or three weeks during the tour so things can change at any time. You just have to think really quickly because she literally has 30 or 40 seconds to change, but she’s become a master at it. The designer pieces are beautiful but the team here adds zippers, double openings. These are little secrets we can do and there’s lots of double-sided tape," explained Tina.

Known for her mesmerising stage outfits, Tina also went on to explain that Beyonce loves searching for new talent: “It has been great to work with some well-known designers, but also so upcoming designers. Beyonce’s stylists Ty Hunter and Raquel Smith are always on the lookout for new designers to bring in. I love David Koma, his designs are really innovative and we wanted something different so we used his skirts.”

When asked what her favourite costume was, Tina replied: “I love the Kenzo outfit. It’s African inspired and I like the movement of it. It’s really cool with the choreography.”
