Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were always one of the most down to earth couples in Hollywood. Placing more focus on their family values than being seen at the hottest clubs and A-list parties, their marriage and family dynamic appeared to be one of the strongest in the biz. Which is why it's came as such a shock when they dropped the 'D' word on us.

Yep, we're sorry to tell you that Bennifer (sorry, for old times sake it had to be done) confirmed that they were filing for divorce at the start of the week, choosing the day after their 10th wedding anniversary to make the decision public. How tragic is that?

However, in another turn of events, even more tear-inducing news from their split has come to light, with reports revealing they've made the tough decision to keep living together as co-parents for the foreseeable future, for the sake of their children. We don't know about you, but we can't even begin to imagine how tough that would be on them...

And, according to reports, the decision has taken its toll on both parties. Speaking of the split, a friend close to the couple told People magazine that Ben is 'devastated', adding: 'Nobody intends to go down this path. They both battled, and he really battled to try and save the marriage but ultimately it was the best thing for the kids and for him and Jen.'

The report also claimed that while the pair are said to have already been split for months, they did everything to try and save their marriage, including couples counselling, as well as individual sessions. 'These are two people who really tried to save their marriage and worked really hard at it.'

And it looks like, through the incredibly hard times, they've never been more set on making their new situation work for their children. So much so, that when the news of their divorce broke, Ben and Jennifer were actually on holiday in the Bahamas together, along with their three children, to try and keep them out of the media spotlight. And, of course, to try to work out what they'll do once their divorce is final. Stop it — we can't take it anymore...

In the official statement released to and distributed by People magazine on Tuesday, they said, 'After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding.' SOB!

The announcement came after months of speculation from the press that Ben and Jennifer were on the rocks, but we hoped, prayed and kept our fingers crossed that it was all just hearsay. However, when photos surfaced of the pair trying to do 'normal' things with their kids over the last few months, there's no denying the strain that seemed to be plaguing each of them.

The pair fell in love after working on Daredevil together back in 2004 and married the following year. They also have three children together - Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3.

To say we're gutted for these two is an understatement, but we hope that they'll find happiness in their very tough decision. Of course, our thoughts go out to Ben, Jennifer and their families at this time.

Sadly, they're not the only A-list couple to have parted ways in the last few weeks — we were just as devastated to learn that Charlize Theron and Sean Penn called off their engagement after returning from a hectic work schedule in Europe.

Seriously, is there something in the water in Hollywood?! Stop doing this to us, guys.
