After a much anticipated wait, it seems that the 50 Shades of Grey movie is a shade closer to hitting our screens after the producers took to Twitter and Facebook to announce its release date.

Focus Features, the producers behind Pride and Prejudice, Brokeback Mountain and The Place Beyond the Pines, announced in a statement: "The global release of Fifty Shades of Grey will start in North America on Friday, August 1st, 2014, with opening dates around the world to be announced."

The announcement comes shortly after 50 Shades author E.L. James also took to Twitter to reveal that Brit director Sam Taylor-Wood is set to direct the sizzling saga.
