Hollywood’s latest sci-fi flick Divergent hits cinemas tomorrow. Here’s five reasons why it’s got that definite Hunger Games vibe…

1) It’s based on a young adult book trilogy

A New York Times bestselling trilogy by Veronica Roth to be more specific - the three books are called Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant.

2) There’s a ballsy, tomboyish heroine

Hollywood up-and-comer Shailene Woodley (who, by the way, is really killing it this year - she’ll star in another huge adaptation of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars next month) is the film’s tough tomboy protagonist Tris. When offered the role she even asked Jennifer Lawrence for advice on the pressures of handling a massive teen movie franchise. Obviously Jennifer’s reply was awesome. 'Do it', she said, “but don’t do a sex tape, don’t do drugs, don’t be stupid and don’t go to Whole Foods on the day the movie opens.'

3) It’s set in a scary dystopian America

A futuristic, post-war Chicago has been divided into five districts. The people who live there are separated into these different areas according to their personality type. This writer would probably be in the ‘bad at picking up her dry cleaning’ quarter.

4) There’s a great Rebelling Against The Man storyline

Teenagers are forced to do a test at 16 to decide which district they fit into. Think the Harry Potter sorting hat ceremony, but WAY less jolly. Tris (Shailene Woodley) fails the test, making her ‘Divergent’ (get it?) so she then joins an underground rebellion of other divergent types to avoid being killed.

5) And don’t forget the all important dishy male love interest!

Where The Hunger Games gave you Liam Hemsworth as Gale, Divergent gives you the equally easy-on-the-eye British actor Theo James as Four. Fun fact: Theo also played the hot Turkish diplomat Lady Mary has a brief triste with in Series 1 of Downton.
