11 Things That Made Cannes 2014 Awesome

Ryan Gosling, marriage proposals, award-winning dogs and (of course) a whole bunch of red carpet bling. Here's ten reasons why Cannes 2014 was brilliant

1) Sharon Stone's entourage

She rocked up at the Grisogono party – which by the way looked like the best party ever – in a low key cavalcade of three cars, six police motorcycle outriders, two bodyguards to keep an eye on the diamonds she was wearing and a further six for good measure. The eight-strong security team still didn't prevent Cara Delevingne from barrelling over and giving Sharon an affectionate face lick. Lovely.

2) The Arnie and Sylvester bromance

The two veteran hard-guys showed their softer sides at the Expendables 3 party with an impromptu waltz. Sweet.

3) Ryan Gosling... just being there

4) When Jess met Cheryl

On her birthday last week our multi-talented beauty writer Jess Tibbits flew out to Cannes to interview Cheryl Cole. She then got the best birthday present ever when Cheryl sang her happy birthday.

5) John Travolta photobombing a marriage proposal

Film Producer Oscar Generale chose a nice quiet spot (the red carpet of the celebrity-packed amfAR gala) to propose to his girlfriend, model Denny Mendez. Who should sidle up next to him mid-proposal than John Travolta. Not a bad story to tell the grandkids.

6) Blake and Ryan doing the classiest matching couple look ever

These two already look like they've sauntered out of a Ralph Lauren advert most of the time. But just LOOK at them here. There's Blake giving it as much megawatt movie star at Cannes va-va-voom as is humanly possible  – love that bold white wraparound train – and there's Ryan tempering the whole thing perfectly in his dapper white tie. Eat your hearts out Kim and Kanye.

7) The Palme Dog Award

The lesser known alternative to the prestigious film award the Palme D'Or, the 'Palm Dog' awards the best canine performance of Cannes. We've got our money on Jean Luc Godard's dog Mieville for his moving performance in the director's new film Goodbye to Language. Look at him smouldering away...

8) Classy French ladies: Sophie Marceau, Berenice Bejo, Marion Cottillard

If you want to know how to nail it on the Cannes red carpet, just take a look at the natives. Marion Cotillard's nonchalantly cool Dior look for the Two Days One Night premiere might just be our favourite Cannes look ever.

9) Celeb selfies

Giving us the most tantilising behind-the-scenes glimpses of all the glamour (and making us rather jealous in the process) were Cara, Kylie and Kendall.

10) Sophia Loren being awesome

Climbing into the photographers pit, telling the press hilarious old movie star anecdotes and generally behaving like she didn't give a damn.

11) Lara Stone's Calvin Klein comeback

One word: HOT.
