Kate Is Rocking Next Season’s Trends Right Now. Who’d Have Thought It?

Tiaras aren’t just for princesses anymore – just look at the SS16 catwalks for proof

It’s not exactly news to report that a princess was seen wearing a pretty tiara. Last night the Duchess of Cambridge chose the Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara, once owned by Princess Diana, to attend a diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace. And earlier this year, she wore the Lotus Flower tiara for a state banquet with the Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

But tiaras are massive news for us normal folk next season too…because they were all over the catwalks at the recent SS16 fashion week shows.

Kate’s tiaras – one an Egyptian-inspired piece first worn by The Queen Mother in 1923 (though she wore it 1920s-style over the lower part of her forehead), and one previously owned by Princess Diana, who was given it as a wedding gift by the Queen – are among several from the royal collection that Kate has enjoyed wearing.

And while she pairs hers with a fancy frock, we’re rather hoping she’ll be pictured out and about next summer having teamed it with some ripped denim and a pair of wellies.

Or perhaps a slinky slip dress with a tiger print coat thrown casually over the top. Because that, people, is the 2016 way to wear your tiara.

At the Saint Laurent SS16 show in Paris earlier this month, Hedi Slimane went all 'Kate Moss at Glastonbury' on us, and not only sent most of the models down the runway in Wellington boots, but popped a tiara on the head of every single one of them as well.

OK, so it’s unlikely that Kate will dare to wear anything like this festival get-up, but luckily this isn’t the only show she can get her headwear inspiration from. Maybe she’s more of a Chanel kinda gal?

Chanel’s tiaras were more like intricate metal headbands and were really easy to wear (our fashion director Arabella Greenhill had a little try on session after the show) and were often teamed with a metal ponytail bow.

A good look for our Duchess’s long locks, we reckon. But maybe a little edgy for the future Queen…so will she be more Dolce & Gabbana?

Something you always expect to see at a Dolce show is at least one tiara. And these are a little more regal, so probably a bit more up Kate’s street. But let’s face it, she has the royal jewels to take her pick from. Why would she be thinking about wearing a tiara from anywhere else?

If it were us though, we’d opt for this look from Miu Miu’s SS16 collection. We’re calling it ‘Regal Granny Chic’ - it's really easy to wear and we reckon even Her Majesty herself could pull this one off…

But wait… just when you thought this on-trend outfit might have been a fluke, Kate’s only gone and stepped out in a polo-neck!

Channelling what is absolutely the most important wardrobe update of the moment, it just goes to show that even though she might be under the thumb somewhat with her sartorial choices, occasionally a current seasonal look can indeed slip through. Kudos Kate!
