Ross had Rachel, Monica had Chandler, Phoebe had Mike, and Joey… had a meatball sandwich. That was just the way it was on Friends, and we kind of made our peace with the fact that the troupe of six wouldn’t pair off perfectly with one another, regardless of the fact that Phoebe and Joey we’re clearly MEANT FOR EACH OTHER.

And, as it turns out, we’re not the only ones who thought the same…

Teaming up to do an interview with US publication People earlier this week, Matt Le Blanc and Lisa Kudrow (who played Joey and Phoebe respectively) revealed that a relationship between the two characters was this close to happening.

Matt made the revelation that: ‘Towards the end we actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time. We'd go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognises, there's Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet together. But they [the producers] were like, “Nah.”’

Sure, it would have seemed too perfect if each member of the gang found love with one another, but how could the studio big wigs ever let this storyline pass them by? Even JOEY knew it made sense, and that’s saying something.

Excuse us while we go and re-watch all the episodes and imagine that Phoebe and Joey are having discreet liaisons throughout. You know, until she gets hitched to Paul Rudd.
