Fifty Shades Of Grey
Spanking and negotiations over genital clamps and fisting: we always knew Fifty Shades was going to be pretty racy, but there was one thing we were genuinely taken aback by in the sex scenes. No, it wasn't anything to do with cable ties, rather Dakota Johnson's full frontal appearance, namely the fact she sports a full on bush. Yep, that's right, it may be a Hollywood hit but there's definitely no sign of a hollywood wax between Dakota's character, Anastasia Steele's, legs. Instead, viewers get a full on glimpse of female pubic hair. Shocking, right? I mean when was the last time anyone walked around the gym changing room sporting hair down below, never mind on the big screen.
Over the last twenty years it's become almost taboo to have anything but a finely shaped landing strip. From Samantha berating Miranda in Sex and City when she spots her bikini line: 'Jesus honey. Wax much? I could be on death row and not have that situation,' to Alec Baldwin discussing Meryl Streep's lack of upkeep in It's Complicated: "You've gone native, I was into it." Unless you're Team Gwyneth Paltrow and Caitlin Moran, no-one has dared bare anything but the absolute minimum. Until now that it, and Anastasia Steele's unashamed fuzzy appearance. Heck, even Christian Grey played by Jamie Dornan doesn't complain.
Speaking to HuffPost Live, director Sam Taylor-Johnson explained that her and Dakota Johnson actually sat down and spoke about the decision not to wax: "It was a conscious choice. Dakota and I had a very funny discussion about the arc and journey of her pubic hair… that she should start one way, and she goes on this journey with it, and in line with how it's written in the book is the journey of that." So with the news that Taylor-Johnson has been confirmed to direct the sequel will Dakota's pubes make another appearance in film number two? Who knows? But for now, the bush has just made a major comeback.
