The BBC has released the earnings of their top talent for the very first time. From the list of presenters, actors and comedians the results reveal that women only make up one third of the ninety-six strong list. In fact, only two women earn over £400,000...
Here is a rundown of the top earners and the key talking points…
The BBC'S Top Earner: Chris Evans £2.2m - £2.25m
Chris Evans, the one-series-Top-Gear-wonder, tops the list of BBC earning talent with his closest rival, Gary Lineker, earning £1.75m- 1.8m for his role on Match of The Day and other BBC Sport programmes. Sue Barker is the highest paid female sports presenter being paid £300,000 - £349,999 by comparison, whereas the hardworking Clare Balding only earns £150,-000 - £199,999 a year. Graham Norton rounds off the top three BBC earners for his Eurovision and namesake chat show, earning £850,000 a year.
The BBC'S Highest Paid Woman: Claudia Winkleman £450k - £499k
One half of the first female duo to present a prime time programme, Claudia Winkleman earns more money than her Strictly Come Dancing counterpart, Tess Daly, who ears £350k- £399k. But, Claudia is responsible for two more BBC shows, including a radio show. That's not the only pay discrepancy on Strictly, with Len Goodman and Bruno Tonoli earning £200,000- £249,000 in comparison to Darcey Bussell and Craig Horwood, who earn £150,00- £199,999 for their judging roles on the show. Interestingly, despite the hunt for a new Take That on Let It Shine being an absolute flop, Dannii Minogue earned £250,000 for her expertise on the show.
The BBC Pay Gap: The One Show with Matt Baker vs. Alex Jones
The gender pay gap is very real on the BBC, it would seem, with The One Show co-presenters Matt Baker being paid more than Alex Jones. The male former Blue Peter presenter earns £450,000-£499,999 in comparison to the new mother’s £400,000. Might make for an awkward couch in the future…
BBC Breaking News: Fiona Bruce Paid £200k Less Than Male Newsreaders
The iconic Fiona Bruce, despite also fronting an additional show, The Antiques Road Show, may be the third highest paid woman with earnings between £350,000 - £400,000 but she loses out to fellow male rivals. By contrast Andrew Marr, Stephen Nolan from BBC Northern Ireland, Huw Edwards all earn over £550,000. Additionally, John Humphrys, Nicky Campbell, Steve Wright, and Jeremy Vine are all paid considerably more despite being on air less than Fiona Bruce.
The BBC Pay Gap on Eastenders: £50K Difference Between Women and Men
Further salary leaks include Eastenders stars Danny Dyer and Adam Woodyatt, who reportedly earn £200,000 to £250,000 each, are paid more than multi award-winning actress Lacey Turner, who plays Stacey. She earns £150,000, that is £50,000 less than her male counterparts, despite carrying some of the most intense story lines on the iconic soap to date.
Hey Mr DJ Turn The Earnings Up: How Much Does Nick Grimshaw Earn?
Presenting Radio 1's flagship show, The Breakfast Show, brings home £350,000 - £399,999 for Nick Grimshaw. Which is considerably less than his BBC 2 rival Chris Evans. Surprisingly, rounding out the top five radio presenters - after Chris Evans, Steve Wright and Grimmy - are Vanessa Feltz and Simon Mayo, who both earn the same as the Radio 1 presenter. Go, Vanessa!
What The BBC Has To Say About The Pay Gap…
Given the evident pay gap the BBC Director-General Tony Hall admitted the corporation needed to go "further and faster on issues of gender and diversity.” Adding: “We need to employ the very best... talented people are critical for our relationship with audiences. Two thirds of list are men. Is it where we want to be? No. We want all our leading presenting roles to be equal between men and women. We want 15% of top earners to be BAME by 2020." Well, all we can say is: about actual time!
