Monica Bellucci

On her new role: “My agent called me and said, ‘Sam Mendes wants to see you for Bond.’ I just blurted out,  ‘I’m not a girl, I’m a woman. I’m a mature woman. Do I have to replace Judi Dench?’ He was laughing, and I was, like, ‘Why do you call me? I’m 50 years old. What am I going to do in James Bond?’  He said, ‘For the first time in history, James Bond is going to have a story with a mature woman. The concept is revolutionary.’ ”

On ageing: “We have to start to respect women getting older. The real you comes out, and you can see it in the face. I don't want to be younger. I don’t want to be 20. Not at all. I’ve been through that. I want to know my story. How am I going to deal with getting older? How am I going to deal with death? There’s no law. The normality for my age is to have a child who is 20, but my kids are 10 and four and a half. Each person has his own course but there’s something strange in my life. I had my first child at 40, my second child at 45, and I play a James Bond girl at 50.”

On being a woman today: “ Women today are so many things. Even the woman who works in the office — she puts on her high heels, a nice jacket, nice hair, and then she comes back in the evening and has to clean everything. To have equal rights is still a big job for women. They work, then they go home and they have to prepare a dinner and take care of the children. They do a double job.”

On her best mates Domenico and Stefano (Dolce & Gabbana): We’ve done many beautiful things together, beautiful campaigns, and they make beautiful clothes. We are close friends and I respect everything they do. I love what they do. Their clothes are sensual and elegant at the same time. They are real artists who love and respect women. Their inspiration is Italy — our culture and our tradition. They are inspired by great Italian movies — by Fellini and Rossellini and those amazing Italian leading ladies such as Sophia Loren and Anna Magnani. And you can feel like one of these women in their creations. They have such a strong identity and you can tell they are Italian."
