Lip balm is a hugely underestimated beauty product. Without it, your lips are more likely to flake, your lipsticks won’t sit anywhere near as smoothly, and that gloss that you’re obsessed with will only highlight cracks and dryness.
Let’s debunk a few myths before we move onto our edit of the very best. First, licking your lips will not suffice as a moisturiser - in fact, water on your lips is more likely to dry them out when said water evaporates off them, while the enzymes in your saliva will do your lips no favours, potentially leading to further soreness as they tamper with the skin.
Second, applying a lip balm categorically doesn’t make your lips more dry over time: lips cannot produce their own moisture as they don’t have sebaceous glands, and they also don’t have the same barrier function as skin so will invariably dry out when exposed to sun or wind/cold - unless, of course, you get your hands on a lip balm.
Convinced? Thought so. Before you flick through the gallery to find the one for you, let’s talk ingredients. Beeswax and shea butter are fantastic at sealing in moisture and keeping lips feeling comfortable, while oils like coconut and almond will replenish and nourish.
If things are looking a bit dire and you want to opt for a boost, try a lip mask, or grab a cotton bud, coat it in your lip balm of choice and roll it over your lips to gently exfoliate and moisturise in one whammy. Finally, don’t forget to get your hands on a lip SPF if you're going out in the sun - lips don’t contain any melanin, and therefore have no natural shield against sun damage.
Without any further ado, here are our tried and tested favourites, including the cult classic By Terry Baume de Rose, the ultimate treat balm by Sisley, and more purse-friendly options galore…
