That's right, ladies; winter is officially here and for 99.9% of us, our time in the sun is completely over until next year. However, just because the darker nights are rolling in it doesn't mean you can't keep up that gorgeous tan you've spent the summer getting just right; with our expert tips and tricks, you can make your glowing tan last all winter long.

Many of us will already be seasoned fake-tanners and, obviously, this is one of the easiest and healthiest ways to keep your skin looking healthy. However, there are several steps you can take to make sure that all of that pain staking application-effort doesn't go to waste.

Jennifer Aniston has one of the best glowing tans in the biz...

To maximise your fake tan, you're advised to prep your skin with a moisturiser beforehand. While this is good practise, you should only use water-based moisturisers or oils on your skin to create the perfect finish. If your primer is oil-based, it will give you a streaky and fast-fading result and, lets face it, no-one wants that.

Another tip for keeping your complexion looking its best is to use a face cream with a gradual self tan built into it, every second day. By using it sparingly, the tanning agents will give your face that peachy glow that it nauturally exudes throughout the summer without going overboard on the colour.

Finally, unless you want to tone down your tan, it's not a good idea to take long showers. It might sound obvious but getting carried away in the shower can lead to certain parts of your body being more exposed to the water-flow, meaning you'll emerge from your cubicle feeling fresh but your tan will end up looking slightly worse for wear. You've been warned...

If, after all of this, you've had a fake tan disaster that turned out more, ahem, bronzed than originally hoped, InStyle's Beauty Writer, Jess Tibbits has an amazing trick for bringing your tan-colour down a notch and getting it back to a faultless, even finish. Check out the video above to see how to rectify any unsightly mishaps.

So, there you have it; they might be easy but these tips will help keep your summer tan going strong throughout the winter (or until your next sunny get-away...).
