Sharmadean Reid is the inspiration and envy of beauty fans across the world - having launched WAH Nails in 2009 she’s now a successful business woman and, inevitably, the go-to source for all things nail art.
Now celebrating the launch of her second book, The WAH Nails Book of Downtown Girls, the twenty-something entrepreneur sat down with InStyle.co.uk to spill her ultimate beauty and career secrets.
What’s her favourite polish of all time? Is there such a thing as nail art for the office? Find out in the interview below…
What’s life been like since launching WAH Nails in 2009?
Very hectic! It took off almost immediately and to be honest, the demand hasn't slowed – it’s been a whirlwind but I feel I achieved what I set out to do.
How did you find the confidence to start your own business?
I was young! And a bit niave. But essentially I knew nail art was going to be massive from my trend reporting I did so I knew it was a fail-safe plan. I also had incredible support from one good friend, which is always really helpful.
The new book touches on the importance of meeting inspiring women - who inspires you and your work?
I'm inspired by lots of independently powerful women who are changing culture. I judge success not by the money made but by the reach of what you are doing and how much you change people's perceptions of something. It's no secret that Martha Stewart is my hero; she has changed people's view of domesticity - a very female domain - and made it cool.
What’s your favourite design from the new book?
I love the bandana nails! Super street.
So, how can we make nail art subtle enough for the office?
Just add a little half moon or contrasting tip. Nude and neon pink look great together.
What’s your favourite nail shade of all time?
Orient x-presso by Essie. It's a creamy coffee-coloured heaven. It's been discontinued but my staff know to pick bottles up if they see it!
The WAH Nails Book of Downtown Girls is available from 2 September (RRP £11.99)
