With the proliferation of #shelfie pictures on Instagram, it’s little wonder that the micro-trend of great formulas coming in pretty packaging is going macro. Why wouldn’t you want something that makes your skin look all lovely AND that is a thing of beauty in and of its own right? Precisely.

RELATED: The Glossier Products Actually Worth Spending Your Money On

Following swiftly on the heels of beautiful beauty brand Glossier is a LIXIR. Comprised of a capsule range of six skincare products formulated by Colette Haydon, who’s a doctor in demo-pharmacy and who believes that skincare can be effective, simple, affordable and pretty to behold. The result? Three products designed to be used by everyone that Colette calls the ‘universal good skin trio,’ and three ‘night switch molecules’ to treat skin.

Here’s a breakdown on each of the products - and our verdict on them:

Lixir Cleanser

LIXIR Electrogel Cleanser

Designed to be multi-tasking, I.e. remove make-up and actually cleanse skin, we’d recommend using this twice a la double cleanse - the first time to remove grime and make-up, and the second time to clean skin. Wondering about the name? Electrogel is negatively charged, meaning it’ll attract positively-charged toxins like pollution and free radicals, washing them away when you rinse.

LIXIR Vitamin C Paste

Vitamin C will really help to give you that glow - provided you use it right. Colette’s says: “the acid form, L Ascorbic Acid, is more effective than any pretender derivatives but it needs to remain an acid to work; as such I formulated a product that you can rinse.” We say that it smells funky but makes skin glowing and that anything that’s going to help offset those free radicals is a winner in our opinion.

LIXIR Universal Emulsion

LIXIR Universal Emulsion

This lightweight water-bearing moisturiser initially feels like it’s not up to much when compared to thicker, richer creams. Give it time. After a week’s use, skin looks a little bouncier and perkier thanks to the influx of hydration. Also, it’s ideal for travel as you can use it around eyes, on lips, and all over your body.

LIXIR Night Switch Retinol

LIXIR Night Switch Retinol

Retinol is the key to slowing the signs of ageing and reversing some areas of damage. To use this one, mix a couple of drops in with your emulsion, and remember to customise your retinol to your skin’s response - if you have a lot of redness or peeling, apply it less frequently and perhaps reduce the number of drops you use until you find a happy medium.

LIXIR Night Switch PHA/AHA 10%

LIXIR Night Switch PHA/AHA 10%

If a hit of vitamin C isn’t enough to get you the level of glow you’re after, get your hands on this. The cocktail of acids will even out skin, rendering it more glass like and radiant. Use nightly under or mixed in with moisturiser for a couple of weeks, then take a week off. Alternatively, use it as a mask to gobble up dead skin cells.

LIXIR Night Switch BHA/AHA 10%

BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) is especially good at treating acne prone skin as it is antibacterial and will unclog pores. Again, use it under or with moisturiser while skin is playing up, and then make a switch when you need to - or use it as a mask. This one has a third handy use: if you’ve only got a couple of spots or an area that tends to get congested, just dab it where you need it.
