Matte reds are a chic classic and are set to be huge for autumn/winter 09. However it can be a tricky finish to wear. We quizzed Lipstick Queen, Poppy King to get her top tips on how to carry off this stand-out look. "You don't want to do too much of a smoky eye with a true red lipstick or you're going to look like you're in 40s costume. Instead, make like Angelina and wear this shade with a relaxed look; loose hair and minimal eye make-up are matt red lipstick's perfect partners. You do need some luminosity on your face with a lipstick finish this flat, so be sure to use some luminiser on the skin."

Application is key; "this is a straight from the tube scenario," Poppy told us, "if you use a lip brush it's going to take forever! Your lip liner needs to match the lipstick exactly and should be applied after the lipstick; this is to avoid any Ronald MacDonald mistakes."
