The new smoky eye
Step One: The prep work
When applying your make-up, always do your eyes first before your base. 'That way, if you have any shadow fall you won’t have to re-apply foundation,' says Simmonds. When it comes to your eyes, the more lived-in the better for this look so you want it to have staying power. 'The trick is to pat a concealing, highlighter pen like Touche Eclat onto lids. 'This works as an eye base to create a wet texture, helping eyeshadow to stick better.'
Step Two: Pencil it in
'The first step to creating a smoky effect is to run a kohl pencil along both upper and lower lashlines,' advises Simmonds. 'Really work it into roots to create definition.' And remember, the messier the line the better. “That’s because it breaks down better than a perfected solid line, making it easier to get that smudgy effect.” Next, using the same pencil, rim your waterline. 'Stop here for a daytime look,” he suggest. “Simply blend it all together with a fluffy blending brush.' For added drama use a big blending brush to smoke out the whole eye. 'Swirl it over the line and up to the socket. Do the same underneath with a smaller brush or your finger.'
Step Three: Apply your shadow
To finish try Simmonds top trick: 'Using your fingers press a black, dark grey or deep chestnut eyeshadow onto the eyelid from lashline to socket. This fixes the pencil underneath so it lasts all night or longer. It also helps the shadow to stick better.' Do the same on your lower lashline, pressing the shadow onto the line. 'Finally, take a blending brush and blend the edges to diffuse the colour. 'You want it to look seamless with no obvious edges.'
And your done! 'Simply top off the look with lashings of mascara.'
What to wear it with...
Skin: Keep it gorgeous and dewy. This creates a modern effect, so it doesn’t veer into 90s grunge territory.
Lips: The more neutral, the better. A matte, smudgy eye looks fresh when paired with a glossy texture. Opt for a pink-toned beige lipgloss or cream-based lipstick.
