How To Get The Perfect Eyeliner Flick Every Single Time, Just Like Alexa Chung

Intro Deck:

It’s time to draw the line — literally — as eyeliner was BIG news at the Met Gala 2015. Let InStyle’s Beauty Director Cassie Steer show you how...

Dust off your geometry sets and start steadying those hands as eyeliner is set to take centre stage over the coming months.

Make-up maestro Pat McGrath dubbed the trend ‘limitless liner’ as she cast her magic over shows such as Givenchy and Prada. The brief? Graphic, strong and very long – an aesthetic the inimitable Alexa Chung has mastered to perfection (trust her to be one step ahead of the game).

But if the thought of trying to emulate a seamless stroke of liner makes you break out in a cold sweat, fear not, as our Beauty Director Cassie Steer proves that you don’t need to be a backstage make-up guru or a modern style icon for that matter to get the look. Her weapon of choice? Bobbie Brown’s Longwear Gel Eyeliner (£18, which she explains gives the drama of a khol but with the staying power of a liquid liner.

Whether you decide to go for a feline flick a la Alexa at the Met Gala 2015, or for a Samurai slash as seen at Jean Pierre Braganza, your starting point will be the same.

Cassie recommends investing in some fine-tipped buds such as Muji’s Fine Stemmed Cotton Buds, £2.50, as these will help you to manipulate your eyeliner into the desired shape as well as tidying up any mistakes. And remember ladies, practice makes perfect.

Speaking of which, once you’ve perfected your technique, don’t be afraid to experiment. Black is of course a classic staple but as the Givenchy show proved, taupe can make an equally chic alternative (although we suggest you perhaps save the red strokes from the Max Mara show for a ‘special’ occasion!)
